Golden Camellias Non-Timber Forest Products for Poverty Reduction
This book arose of our interests on Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) for poverty reduction in the mountainous region of poor tropics. Silviculture Research Institute (SRI) belonging to Vietnamese Academy of Forest Sciences has been running a Project "Research and Development for Golden Camellias in North Vietnam". The Project aims at issuing a series of technical guidelines for seedling production, plantation establishment, tending, harvesting, and processing for some main golden camellias, naturally distributing in Vietnam. All authors are trained in forest and agriculture sciences and work side by side as researchers at SRI, Institute of Forest Tree Improvement and Biotechnology, and Vietnam National University. Our collaborations in the field and lab works arose the idea and concept for this book. This book arises out of an urgent need to establish and develop golden camellias, serving for human health and improving income for local, especially ethnic communities in mountainous regions.
We gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the Vietnam Ministry of Science and Technology, which partially funded the work. We would like to thank colleagues at the Vietnamese Academy of Forest Sciences, plantation owners, processing firms, and other interested persons, we met in the fields, for sharing information.
We hope that this book will expose policymakers, researchers, marketers, and local people to the rich empirical studies on golden camellias, which are practical for reducing poverty and preserving the diversity of NTFPs in tropics.
